Before there was a band, there were two children beneath an Arizona sky.

Isabella sang the songs she hadn’t yet found the courage to share. David listened, his acoustic guitar resting against his knee. As they grew older, friendship became the place each returned to—a familiar voice, a melody remembered, someone who understood.

They loved the warmth of seventies records and the bright promise of eighties songs. But the music they wanted to make came from their faith.

They called themselves Of Ash & Light.

A few songs reached the radio. For a moment, the world seemed to be listening.

The Night Everything Changed

One night, Isabella did not come home.

When David reached the hospital, he found her badly burned, barely holding on. He sat beside her, frightened by how much he wanted to say and how little she could hear.

So he stayed.

Through the long months that followed, he learned the small things: when she wanted the curtains open, when she needed silence, when a familiar song might help her endure another afternoon.

Isabella’s questions were harder.
